Declutter your workspace and give yourself an energy boost – 5 tips to get started

Do you often find yourself sitting and wondering where that important document is or something niggling in your mind that you needed to do but just couldn’t find it through the stacks of papers and stuff that have accumulated over the year?

Clutter can leave us feeling anxious, expelling energy in places it just isn’t required and can in turn really affect our mood. We aren’t wired as humans to be disorganised – we need order! Investing a little time in decluttering our work surroundings is a fantastic way of helping reduce stress, relaxing your mind and leaving you the time to focus on what really matters. It will really create a sense of energy!

The fantastic Charlotte Charik from simpifyyourhome.co.uk has given us the following 5 tips to help clear your work surroundings bringing back the creativity and calm;

Tip 1

The key to staying organised is to first get rid of everything that you don’t need. Invest a couple of hours at the start of the year to remove everything from your desk, recycle what you don’t need, throw away old notes and pens that no longer work and give your desk a good clean down. Are there documents, bills, letters and invoices that can be scanned and filed electronically? If so do it, the less we have around us, the better and more productive we feel.

Tip 2

Make sure everything important that’s left has a home – this is key to keeping the clutter at bay. Keep the items that have regular use the closest and most accessible. A tray or file for those ‘to do’ documents and another for ‘completed’ that can either be scanned and filed or shredded/thrown away.

Tip 3

Commit to tidying up your workspace at the end of each day. Starting afresh the next day will leave you feeling revived.

Tip 4

Electronic clutter is just as important as the physical. Make sure your emails are well organised and that you set aside time in your calendar each day to clear them. When working on important projects/tasks, turn off your notifications. These interruptions can reduce productivity and creativity and can stop you from completing a task.

Tip 5

Have just one paper to-do list each day that you can mark off and throw away at the end of the day. Clearing our tasks and knowing we have nothing hanging over us makes us feel refreshed rather than overwhelmed.

Investing a little time in decluttering our work surroundings is a fantastic way of helping reduce stress, relaxing your mind and leaving you the time to focus on what really matters. It will really create a sense of energy!
